IB Diploma programme
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is for students aged 16-19.
What is the DP?
The IB Diploma Programme at BIHS equips students with strong academic knowledge across core subjects while supporting their intellectual, emotional, and ethical development. Students study and communicate in more than one language, engage in rigorous university-preparatory coursework, and develop advanced critical thinking skills through the Theory of Knowledge, preparing them for success in higher education and a global environment.
Why offer the DP?
Students who complete the IB Diploma Programme consistently demonstrate stronger post-secondary outcomes, including higher enrolment, persistence, and graduation rates. IB Diploma graduates also show greater academic success in higher education compared to peers from other pathways and report stronger development of key 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, communication, and adaptability.
The DP curriculum
The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum consists of six subject groups alongside the DP core, which includes Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay.
Through the DP core, students explore the nature of knowledge, engage in independent research, and complete projects—often involving community service. This core component is designed to expand students’ learning experiences and encourage them to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful, real-world contexts.
Choosing subjects in the DP
The IB offers guidance to support students in selecting their courses. Students select their subjects from six groups: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. Alternatively, instead of a subject in the Arts, students may choose an additional subject from Sciences, Individuals and Societies, or Languages.
Assessment and exams
DP assessment measures both advanced skills—like analyzing information, constructing arguments, and problem-solving—and basic skills, while encouraging an international perspective. Results are based on set standards, not class rank. Assessment combines external exams, such as essays and case studies, with internal teacher-assessed tasks like language orals, science labs, and artistic performances.
Who is the DP for?
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) are for students aged 16–19, offering rigorous, well-rounded education and career-focused learning, while fostering critical thinking, global awareness, and lifelong skills. Both develop students according to the IB learner profile and are recognized by universities worldwide.
