IB Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is for students aged 11-16.

What is the MYP?

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a rigorous and engaging framework designed to help students connect classroom learning with real-world applications, building critical thinking and practical skills.

The MYP is offered over five years and can also be delivered in flexible formats of two, three, or four years, depending on the school structure. Students who successfully complete the programme are well prepared for the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP). The MYP focuses on developing confident, independent learners with a global outlook, strong values, and a clear sense of purpose.

The MYP curriculum

The MYP curriculum is structured around eight subject groups, ensuring a broad, balanced, and well-rounded education for students during their formative years.

Each subject group is allocated a minimum of 50 teaching hours per academic year. In the final two years of the programme, defined flexibility within the subject groups allows students to align their studies with local academic requirements while pursuing their individual interests and learning goals.

Access and eligibility

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is open to students aged 11 to 16 at schools authorized to offer the programme. The MYP is inclusive by design and supports students of different interests and academic abilities. While it is implemented as a whole-school programme, it can also accommodate academically selective models.There are MYP students all over the world – the programme is taught in almost 100 countries.

Developing Students in the MYP

The MYP aims to develop students who are active learners, internationally minded, and able to empathize with others. The programme equips students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to lead purposeful and meaningful lives. The MYP can motivate students and help them to achieve success in school and in life beyond the classroom.
